I know I am not the only one who feels this when I say that fall is the best season when living in the Midwest.

I’m not sure which part of fall I would consider my favorite, really. Maybe having the windows open overnight and waking up to the birds singing and the cool/cold breeze that emerges with the smell of fresh air. That smell is one you cannot explain but love nonetheless.

Or maybe the fall flavors and the instantaneous desire for comfort foods and cozy fleece hoodies.

Possibly the ultimate favorite would be the ever changing colors of the foliage. Fiery red, burnt orange and even some plum. It’s as if autumn is the season that sends the reminder to push through the fire to get to the beauty.

A few years ago I went through an awakening of sorts, which knocked me to the ground. (Read here about a few of the physical ailments that resulted.)

I had to come to terms with things that I ultimately knew in my head, but was denying in my heart. I honestly didn’t know what would become of me as I was crawling through that very dark season.

I did, however, through prayer and clinging to the coat-tail of Jesus, knew that if I just held on tightly and trusted Him that I would eventually make it (even though I didn’t exactly know what ‘make it’ truly meant for me). I knew in my heart of hearts that even though I felt like I was beaten down to dust that eventually I would be whole again.

My eyes were opened to a lot of painful things that forced me to analyze the trajectory of my life. I had to accept the things that I had already knew as truth and not make excuses for them. I had to remove the rose colored glasses and see things as they truly were. I had to take an honest look at how I was being mishandled by those who loved me.

It felt like I was walking thru the heat and setting myself ablaze.

But God gave me an autumn.

Slowly things began to change.

My eyes began to see small glimpses of beauty around me.

As I was able to release the burden of heartache and forgive, more beauty emerged.

God used the engulfing pain that left me as dust to transition me into a stronger, healthier, truth embracing and boundary filled me.

Autumn, to me, means hope.

A transition from a hard season of sweat and heat and harshness, into one filled with beauty, fresh air and comforting togetherness.

To me, autumn will forever give me a renewed sense that things will be okay.

Below are my favorite images this week – enjoy!

I hope you find glimpses of hope this season. Praying for you, friends.

This is unfortunately what emotional abuse will do – they will break you down and leave you feeling like everything is your fault. They way you feel is your fault. They way they treat you is your fault. The way you react to their behavior is because YOU are the villain. Do not believe it – trust your intuition.
