Learning to let go of the need for perfection can be a difficult task, especially when it comes to stepping out of our comfort zones in order to achieve our goals. I have struggled with this for more years than I care to admit.
When we strive for perfection, we often become paralyzed by the fear of failure and end up holding ourselves back. By embracing imperfection, we allow ourselves to take risks and learn from our mistakes and struggles. It takes practice to let go of the need for perfection, but the rewards of progress and growth [personal and professional] are well worth it. Sometimes taking imperfect steps towards our goals is better than not taking any steps at all.
In the Bible, we see countless examples of people who faced challenges but persevered by taking action. One of my favorite examples is the story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17. David was just a young shepherd boy when he faced the giant Goliath in battle. But instead of being paralyzed by fear, or becoming infected by the thoughts of everyone around him, David took action and defeated Goliath with a single stone. David’s faith in God and his willingness to take a massive imperfect step towards his goal led to victory.
We can also take inspiration from the story of the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5:25-34. This woman had been suffering from a hemorrhage for 12 years and had spent all her money on doctors who couldn’t help her. Can you imagine the devastation and hopelessness she must have felt due to the words and judgement of people around her for something she had no control over? But when she heard about Jesus, she took a massive imperfect step towards her goal of healing by pushing through a crowd to touch his cloak. Her faith and determination were rewarded when Jesus healed her, saying, “Daughter, you are well because you dared to believe. Go in peace, and stay well.” (The Voice translation)
These stories remind us that, as Christians, we are called to trust in God’s plan for our lives and take action towards our goals, even if we feel inadequate or imperfect. And, to move towards them without fear of ridicule and judgement from those around us. This is important when we are dealing with physical ailments or other challenges that may make our goals seem impossible. By taking massive imperfect steps, we can move towards our goals even in the face of adversity.
Looking back on my own journey, I realize that taking risks and imperfect steps towards a goal is not always easy, but it is always worth it. We may stumble and fall along the way, but every mistake and setback is an opportunity for growth and learning. As Christians, we can find strength and encouragement in the promises of God, and we can trust that He will guide us through even the toughest and most devastating of times.
Taking those steps has helped me to trust in God’s plan for my life and to lean on Him for strength when I am weak. Which has resulted in tremendous growth and a better understanding of who I am and where I’m headed.
So if you are feeling overwhelmed or discouraged in your pursuit of your goals or in following the path that you feel God is leading you down, remember that taking massive imperfect steps is better than not taking any steps at all.
Taking steps towards our goals is not always easy, especially when we are dealing with physical ailments or other challenges. But as Christians, we are called to trust in God’s plan for our lives and take action towards our goals, even if we feel inadequate or imperfect. By doing so, we can overcome adversity and achieve our dreams, just as David and the woman with the issue of blood did in the Bible.
Trust in God’s plan for your life, lean on Him for strength, and keep moving forward. Your path may not be perfect, but it will lead you to where you are meant to be.
Deuteronomy 31:8, “The Lord is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”
Proverbs 16:9, “A person’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps.”
Psalm 37:4, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.”
Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”
