Hello Friends and happy Friday!
I took the month of June off from writing and the break was necessary – the first full month of everyone home for the summer. One would think the first *free* month would include relaxing days that include porch-sitting-coffee-drinking mornings and calm stress free dinners together as a family. I hope it was like that for you! Here in the Blake house, however, the month of June included drivers education for our youngest that began at 7am each day (seriously, 7am?!) and evenings of my three men working hard for their money.
Can you relate? Has the past month been filled with one activity and event and gathering after another? I’m curious if you feel the same as I do, that summer break is just as chaotic and over scheduled as the school year?
I remember when my kiddos were little and by the time May came around I was so excited to get them out of school and at home with me full time. Our summers were filled with no schedule, no early wake ups, no early bed times…we were on our own. Even though I did have a summer “schedule” of activities and such, it wasn’t as frigid and strict as during the school year.
Now that my kiddos (I say kiddos but my oldest will be 21 this fall) are older it seems like the down time is few and far between. One of our kiddos will be heading to college in the fall and our eldest is wanting to find a job/apartment in the same college town to be near his brother (and also so next year they can live together). The hubby and I feel that this summer may be the last with the boys calling our family home their permanent address.
This year we are experiencing several milestones – oldest child turning 21, middle child graduating high school/attending college, youngest child turning 16, hubby turning 50 and mom celebrating her one year anniversary of returning to homemaker/stay at home mom status (was also previously a SAHM from 2003-2013).
I think I’m feeling allllll the emotions this summer. Excuse me while I ugly cry in the corner with my box of tissues. #partyofone
All this reflection only to say, be present with your kiddos every day. Don’t be so focused on *doing* that you neglect to sit with your kiddos and get to know who they are. You can create all the memories through activities and crafts, but your kids also want to feel known by you.
Piece of advice (take it or leave it) – don’t allow your schedule to be so full that you forget to take some slow time to sit and talk with your kiddos. Not just in the car traveling from one activity to another but to sit down face to face and allow them to see you be intentional and 100% focused on them.
This post is kind of all over the place which is why I’ve always called this ‘introverted musings’ as it is very much how my brain works. (This letter board below explains how I work most of the time…)
This weeks pins continue with that theme, and are completely random. #sorrynotsorry #notshowingmyage #autoimmunebrainfog
Hope you all have a fantastic week! Thanks again for stopping by and saying ‘hi!’
